Even though over the past years companies have been trying to phase out the use of these harmful chemicals, it is said that they will remain in our body for years and maybe even decades, which can cause other developmental problems.

The widespread uses of these chemicals are known to lower the fertility in couples, and may be the answer to the people who are diagnosed with unexplained fertility, or even why they cannot get pregnant. In studies, it has been shown that women with higher levels of perfluorooctanoate (PFOA) and perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) have a harder time and take longer to get pregnant than women with lower levels of these chemicals.

Other reports in the Human Reproduction January 29th edition states that another common plastic chemical, bisphenol A (BPA), may also cause developmental problems. That is problems in the fetuses and infants.

In the study Dr. Olsen and his team took data from 1,240 women where blood was drawn and asked questions about how long did it take them for them to get pregnant.

After studying the blood samples of the women, they were divided up into four groups depending on their blood levels of PFOS and PFOA. There was a big difference in how much of the chemicals were in each woman such that the range for PFOS was 6.4 nanograms per milliliter to 106.7 ng/ml. And for the chemical PFOA, it ranged from 1 ng/ml to 41.5 ng/ml.

The women who were separated into three of the groups contained the highest levels of PFOS where found to have more trouble to get pregnant. About 70 percent to 134 percent were found to have complications in the length of time it took for them to get pregnant. While it only took the women with the higher PFOA levels 50 to 154 percent longer to get pregnant.

This fairly a new study, and the reasons why chemicals such as PFOS and PFOA would increase the chances of a couples chances of being infertile. However, speculations are being made that these chemicals may affect the hormone levels in both the male and female reproductive system.

The problem with these kinds of studies is that it only creates more panic and fear in people, and the overall study doesn’t even gives us an answer to why these chemicals are causing these problems to our bodies and causing couples to be infertile. Overall, these studies only creates more fear that other things we don’t even know about is harming our body day in and day out.
