Studies have shown that within the first five years after having been diagnosed with ovarian cancer, survival rates didn’t change if they opted in sparing an ovary or their uterus versus having a hysterectomy.

Women who go through hysterectomies (removing both ovaries) will lose all their reproductive ability. Having a hysterectomy may lead to other health issues such as being deprived of estrogen. But, as of now, having a hysterectomy is the best treatment for ovarian cancer (According to Columbia University).

Over the course of this study, over 4,000 patients with ovarian cancer who were 50 years old or younger were observed by Dr. Wright. All the patients had undergone surgery within the last six years. Dr. Wright found that about 650 women who had ovarian cancer had some uterine preservation, and about 400 had an ovary conserved.  What was also shocking was that most of the patients’ survival rates were no different from those who had a full hysterectomy or both ovaries removed.
