Fertility Problems – Choosing An OBGYN
After you discover that you are pregnant, you should immediately make an Obstetrics and Gynaecology (OBGYN) appointment. However, prior to visiting your OBGYN, there are a few things you should keep in mind. Here we will discuss some helpful tips on how to choose the right OBGYN who will be able to satisfy your needs.
Ask. Before selecting, you should always ask your close friends, family, and colleagues for recommendations. Before you start searching online make sure you go to a website with a doctor who is certified. If someone had a great experience during their pregnancy, ask them who helped them.
Making the appointment. After selecting your potential OBGYN you should make an appointment. Try and find one who is willing to see you right away. Some have a policy that they will not see you until you reach your 12th week. By finding an OB who will see you whenever you want insures a healthy pregnancy and is also a good sign that he will do everything that you need. This will minimize the chances of getting a miscarriage.
Epidural. Choosing to use epidural while giving birth is your decision. Epidural is a form of anesthesia which is injected into your epidural space to reduce the sensation of pain by blocking the transmission of signals through nerves in or near your spinal cord. You should always take pre-cautions and research anything before deciding on something. Some risks of an epidural include:
- Anatomical abnormalities, such as spina bifida, meningomyelocele or scoliosis.
- Certain problems of the central nervous system, including multiple sclerosis or syringomyelia
- Certain heart-valve problems
An epidural should not be used:
- Lack of consent
- Bleeding disorder or anticoagulant medication
- Infection near the point of insertion
- Infection in the bloodstream which may “seed” via the catheter into the central nervous system
- Uncorrected hypovolemia (low circulating blood volume)
Whatever you decision may be, you should keep your significant other up-to-date on what is happening.
Investigate. Once you have your OBGYN selected you should take the time and do some research on your own. Make sure you ask your doctors, family, and friends to help find the obstetrician who will cater to your needs. If you happen to have friends who work in clinics or hospitals, don’t hesitate to call. Make sure you check with your state medical board to see if there are any thing that pops up as a red flag. And most importantly don’t forget to gather information on the hospital. Even if you like the doctor, the hospital may not have a great reputation.
We know choosing the right OBGYN can be stressful, but don’t worry take a deep breath and everything will be fine. Most importantly don’t stress out. This is supposed to be one of the happiest moments of your life. Sure you have to be more responsible, disciplined, and focused, but being calm will help you get through this process as smooth as possible.
